Your HP MFP must have the most current firmware BEFORE installing version 2.01 of the Smartcard Authentication Agent PJL.
The "Current Version" date must be "18 Sept 09" or later.

    Use the following order when installing the Smartcard Authentication Agent version 2.01:

    1. Upgrade the firmware to a version with datecode "18 Sept 09" or later.
    2. Install the Smartcard Authentication Agent version 2.01.

    CAUTION: If a 49.4c18 error occurs when the MFP restarts, the cause of the error is installing the Smartcard Authentication Agent version 2.01 update and restarting without the required version of firmware installed.

    To enable the device to boot to Ready after this error message has appeared:

    1. Turn the device off and back on.
    2. Hold down the 9 key during the memory test.

Updating the MFP firmware

This section provides instructions for updating the firmware on the MFP to allow it to work with the U.S. DoD Smartcards. The MFP network address is required in order to install the firmware.

Enable the firmware update on the MFP
If the MFP is configured with the recommended security settings, the ability to upgrade the FileTransfer Protocol (FTP) firmware might be disabled. Use the following instructions to enable thefirmware updates.

  1. Open a Web browser, type the IP address of the MFP into the address bar, and then pressEnter. The browser opens the Embedded Web server (EWS) page for the MFP.
    NOTE: If the MFP is configured with the recommended security settings, the ability to accessthe EWS from a Web browser might be disabled. If the EWS page does not display in the Webbrowser, enable access to the EWS using HP Web JetAdmin. For more information, see theMFP user guide.
